Privacy and your Christmas Gifts?

Why does privacy matter?
We've been discussing the implications of privacy and it's impact on our daily lives. We discussed what's currently going on in China with their development of a citizen rating system. Seems incredibly extreme, but the prevailing thinking among us is that it won't happen here. Or will it.

By default many of the products we use today are listening to us. Whether it's through our devices's camera, microphone or by location (GPS tracking). All this data is being used by companies and we have almost no control over it. So before we make our loved one's lives more complicated this Christmas let's do a little research and show that we care about their privacy.

Follow this link and take a look at the products listed: https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/

For this post I want you to research two products that you either currently have or were thinking of giving someone else for Christmas and click on it and reveal your findings to our class what the results are.

PLEASE CHECK THE BLOG FIRST TO MAKE SURE SOMEONE HAS NOT DONE THE PRODUCT YOU ARE. I WOULD LIKE TO AVOID CROSS POSTING.

Sample post:
I was thinking about getting the Roku Streaming Player for my parents for Christmas. Now I know that it shares user information with 3rd parties. The microphone can spy on me and the app has location tracking. Knowing this i'm now considering a new pair of slippers instead.

Comments

  1. I currently have a PS4. Now I know that the device can't spy on me at all, but the app can. Also, it shares my information with 3rd parties for unexpected reasons. Knowing this, i'm going to share less information with my playstation.

I was planning to get Apple TV for my dad this Christmas. Now I know that the device tracks location and it shares information with 3rd parties. Knowing this, I'm still going to buy it.

  2. My mom currently has a kindle, and I was thinking of getting her a new one. I didn't know that it collected my information and gave it to third parties without my permission. I knew there was no password, but this piece of tech seems pretty safe despite this.

I have an i-Pad, and I thought it was way worse than it is. It doesn't record me through the microphone or camera, but it does share my information. That does creep me out slightly, since I know the apps use my information to track my whereabouts. My i-Pad is going to be staying home now.

  3. I was thinking of buying my brother an Apple watch. This smart watch tracks your steps, plays your music, makes your calls, and has Siri without even having to say "Hey Siri." With this he can use this as a second phone and I will still buy it.

I do not have Cue the Robot and it looks pretty cool. It does not share your information with 3rd parties for unexpected reasons. This robot connects to a variety of apps via Bluetooth to let kids 11 and up talk, play, and learn to code. Seeing this, I would totally buy this product.

  5. I have recently bought an Amazon Alexa and my friend Katie has a Google Home. Reading many articles about these products can bring up the question "Who is listening on the other end" With the simple commend of "Okay Google" or "Alexa" the devices can do a various amount of commands such as set an alarm, read a recipe, or play a song. I recommend this product to people who could use an extra hand around the house

  6. My Nephew has a amazon fire HD kids edition, my sister always has it on while were in the car so he could watch movies. Ir can track your location with certain apps so that makes me a little worried. But we still use it.

My mom wanted a kindle for her birthday that coming up. I think is a great gift to give her so she can read all her books, especially at night. I would buy this for her.
